A Lightweight Verification Stack for Newsrooms

This collection is designed for small newsrooms, freelancers, and editors who need to verify fast-moving claims without pretending every assignment deserves a full forensic workflow.

Use this stack when

A story needs a defensible first pass on claim history, visual reuse, suspicious links, time-and-location clues, or original-file evidence under deadline pressure.

Recommended sequence

• Recover the earlier claim with Wayback Machine and create a citation-stable capture with Perma.cc when the page matters to publication.
• Use Google Fact Check Explorer to find prior assessments before repeating the same verification work.
• Run TinEye on a key still or use InVID to extract testable frames when the claim depends on video.
• Use ExifTool only on an original or preserved media file, and treat editable metadata fields as clues rather than proof.
• Use urlscan.io for a suspicious public page, keeping the public-submission consequence in mind.
• Use SunCalc only after a place and time hypothesis exists, then corroborate the result with imagery and direct reporting.
• Move to OpenCorporates when a later branch names a company whose legal identity needs confirmation.
